Archiving: Philosophy and Principles
Australian Film
Commission
The
Australian Film Commission (AFC) aims to enrich Australia's cultural
identity by fostering an internationally competitive audiovisual
production industry; developing and preserving a national collection
of sound and moving images; and making Australia's audiovisual
heritage available to all Australians. The AFC is an Australian
Government agency and maintains offices in Brisbane, Canberra,
Melbourne and Sydney.

Independent Media Arts Preservation, Inc.
(IMAP)
The new IMAP web
site functions as a hub - a centralized location that outlines key
issues in the field of independent media arts preservation and
provides specific information and resources for video, audio and
digital media preservation. Additionally, the site forefronts the work
of IMAP: its mission, flagship projects (such as the Cataloging
Project), services, and initiatives.
International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives
(IASA) The
International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) was
established in 1969 in Amsterdam to function as a medium for international
co-operation between archives that preserve recorded sound and audiovisual
documents. IASA supports the exchange of information and fosters
international co-operation between audiovisual archives in all
fields.

Council on Archives (ICA) The International Council on Archives
(ICA) is dedicated to the advancement of archives worldwide. Archives, by
providing evidence of human activities and transactions, underlie the
rights of individuals and states, and are fundamental to democracy and
good governance. Archives safeguard the memory of mankind by preserving

Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) Founded in Paris in 1938, FIAF is
a collaborative association of the world's leading film archives whose
purpose has always been to ensure the proper preservation and showing of
motion pictures.

Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) The
International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions is the
leading international body representing the interests of library and
information services and their users. It is the global voice of the
library and information profession.

Federation of Television Archives (FIAT/IFTA) The International Federation
of Television Archives (FIAT/IFTA) is an international professional
association established to provide a means for co-operation amongst
broadcast and national audiovisual archives and libraries concerned with
the collection, preservation and exploitation of moving image and recorded
sound materials and associated documentation.
L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation
The L. Jeffrey
Selznick School of Film Preservation is the first permanent
institution entirely dedicated to archival training in this field. The
school provides students with a comprehensive program including the
theory, methods, and practice of archival work and film restoration.
The individual, hands-on approach is a crucial component of the
school, as students will gain practical experience working with the
Eastman House staff, learning how films are saved from destruction and
restored with photochemical and digital techniques.
MIC (Moving Image Collections)
MIC, a collaboration between the Library of
Congress and the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA),
integrates an online catalog of moving images (over 340,000 titles and
growing) with an international online archive directory and hundreds
of informational resources, including original papers and links to
resources on moving images and moving image preservation.

films and other audiovisual works which reflects Canada to Canadians
and the rest of the world.
PARADISEC
Collection
PARADISEC
(Pacific And Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered
Cultures) offers a facility for digital conservation and access for
endangered materials from the Pacific region, defined broadly to
include Oceania and East and Southeast Asia. Our research group has
developed models to ensure that the archive can provide access to
interested communities, and conforms with emerging international
standards for digital archiving. We have established a framework for
accessioning, cataloguing and digitising audio, text and visual
material, and preserving digital copies. The primary focus of this
initial stage is safe preservation of material that would otherwise be
lost, especially field tapes from the 1950s and 1960s.

UCLA Film and Television Archive's Cataloging Procedure Manual
Uses a
combination of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed. rev. (AACR2R)
and Archival Moving Image Materials: a Cataloging Manual (AMIM2)
rules, Library of Congress subject headings (LCSH) and Moving Image
Materials: Genre Terms (MIM) genre and form terms in MARC 21 format
records on Voyager. The procedure manual indicates which rules we are
following in any given situation and contains many examples. In
addition, the CPM contains local rules for uniform titles, supplied
titles, local subject headings and genre/form terms, and terms for use
in the physical description of archival moving image materials, with
an extensive glossary of the latter, including suggested MARC 21
coding. The glossary in particular might be useful to institutions
that deal on an occasional basis with film or video.

ethical issues. The Organization also serves as a clearinghouse for
the dissemination and sharing of information and knowledge while

co-operation among its 190 member states and six associate members in
the fields of education, science, culture and communication.
